Open minds can lead to an overflow of information as we start the new year. Fresh thinking is stirred when mental Mercury enters innovative Aquarius on January 1. Yet an even bigger wave of bright ideas arises when Jupiter begins a year-long stay in Aquarius on January 5. The planet of expansion and philosophy's presence in this forward-looking sign promises fresh concepts for fixing our present problems and creating new structures for the future. However, if we gulp down these ideas too quickly, we can develop intellectual indigestion when Mercury turns retrograde on January 11. The backward turn of this normally speedy planet signals a need to assimilate information slowly and carefully, especially when it re-enters conservative Capricorn on January 20. This is Inauguration Day in the United States, when Barack Obama officially becomes president. The Sun's entry into Aquarius on January 19 seems to support a change of regime and, more importantly, a more progressive attitude from the Chief Executive. However, retro Mercury in Capricorn may awaken the forces of resistance that are more comfortable with obstruction than innovation.
Fortunately, compassion and romance will not be lost in a winter's blizzard of mental activity. Loving Venus enters sensitive Pisces on January 3 to help melt barriers that keep hearts apart. Idealism can elevate relationships beyond the bounds of individual interest, although we can expect complications in our connections with others between January 22 and 24 when Venus makes aspects to freedom-loving Uranus and dutiful Saturn. Leave plenty of room for changes of mood and emotional ups and downs during this rocky period. This isn't the time to lock into a partnership or agree to rules since emotions and conditions may change quickly. The Full Moon on January 10 is in the cuddly sign of Cancer where safety comes first. The Sun's opposition from hard-nosed Capricorn, though, is demanding that we tough it out instead of seeking the shelter in familiar places and welcoming faces. The good news is that this Full Moon forms harmonious angles to the Saturn-Uranus opposition, helping us choose the best of the old (Saturn) and mixing it successfully with the best of the new (Uranus). No matter how flooded we become with feelings, there appear to be solutions that can help us find a balanced position.
Energetic Mars moves from a smart 60-degree sextile with inventive Uranus on January 22 to a constructive 120-degree trine with pragmatic Saturn on January 24 that offers opportunities to turn original concepts into reality. The Sun's conjunction with generous Jupiter on January 23 enriches this period with vision, optimism and salesmanship. The New Moon in Aquarius on January 25 continues this upbeat trend with lucky Jupiter in close proximity to the Sun-Moon conjunction. If you are seeking for answers, look outside the box of conventional thinking and to find them. Serious times require open minds that are not limited by the rules of the past or hindered by a lack of imagination.
